Kaitlin Keegan, the Naarm/Melbourne-via-Boorloo/Perth singer-songwriter, is an exciting artist on the rise. Her latest EP, alone is too loud, has endeared listeners to the artist and showcases Keegan’s captivating vocals, her tender, emotionally aware songwriting and her preternatural ability to capture the universal in the everyday.
The 4 track EP was produced and mixed by Stephen Charles (WILSN, Tyne-James Organ) at The Aviary Abbotsford. In her own words, Kaitlin explains, “alone is too loud, was written about big feelings. Songs about the human experience, relationships, heartbreak, and anxiety. The title comes from my favourite lyric in ‘Ghost You’, “Alone is too loud, two is a crowd, any more is a nightmare”. I think about the EP as a little lifecycle of relationships. If ‘Without You’ is the messy break-up, then ‘Ghost You’ is the party where you bump into your least favourite person. ‘Replay’ is meeting someone new and feeling all the butterflies, and ‘Ring Of Fire’ is falling for someone new, and the cycle begins again. I’ve experienced and supported so many friends in each of these stages, and I know that everyone can relate to at least one.”
The EP, along with previous standalone singles ‘Missed Call’ and ‘Separate’, has earned strong support from triple j, Double J and Unearthed as well as spins across community radio. Playing regularly around her adopted hometown, Keegan has cemented her reputation as an artist whose songs are deeply personal but also endlessly relatable – set to a backdrop of irresistibly melodic, shimmering folk-pop.
In her short career so far, she already has a slew of impressive achievements under her belt: Inking a publishing deal with Mushroom Music, being invited to SongHubs – a songwriting workshop curated by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla, appearing at Isolaid Festival, selling out headline shows across Melbourne and recently supporting Sophie May (UK).
Along with her own music, she has also collaborated with WA’s Supathick and electronic artist Tim Shiel, appearing on his song ‘Sparrow’, which was added to Double J, multiple playlists across Spotify and Apple Music as well as receiving airplay from US tastemaker station KCRW. As Shiel himself says, “Kaitlin’s voice has a stunning purity and directness that embeds reality in everything she sings, and as a songwriter she has a gift for elevating the everyday into something majestic, and that’s a rare gift.”
