Six Degrees double bill – Simon London + the Spirits joined by Claybird for a one-off show – Sat 14th December.
For the first time ever, expat Freo bands Claybird and Simon London + the Spirits are teaming up for a one-off show this Saturday 14th December at Six Degrees Albany. The rare double-bill show will roll from those deep grooves of Claybird’s earthy soul/folk/dub through to the Spirits’ atmospheric journeys, whether it be their beautiful ambience, driving rock or gritty blues.
Come along for the journey – it’s sure to be some ride! Now both residing on the south coast, Claybird were well-loved Fremantle favourites before departing for that southern coast musical life – and are now Albany/Kinjarling locals. With their soulful songs, dynamic shows and varied instrumentation, this is a band to get the crowd up and moving – that sun-kissed celebration of life bringing its own compelling magic.Having been busy in the studio, Claybird will be launching their new single South Beach on the night. After a short break, great southern singer-songwriter Simon London has been out on the road again with his band Simon London + the Spirits to launch their latest single ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’, the title track from their latest album. The album – with glowing reviews from critics – has re-established Simon London + the Spirits as a standout south-coast act, producing premier music and renowned for their powerful live shows. The new single – a picaresque montage of shared tour stories and band life laid over a catchy blues groove and earworm chorus – drills right to the heart of the album’s theme; but this time squaring up to loss in a more piss-take than woe kind of way.Deliberately alluding to that giant Simple Minds song (think Judd Nelson, the Breakfast Club and general high school delinquency), Don’t You Forget About Me turns loss on its head, as a nostalgic celebration of the great, the not-so-great and the tragicomic life shared between two creative mates over a couple of decades of touring.Recently reformed in late 2021 after a long spell, Simon London + the Spirits haven’t wasted any time, pushing out their fourth album and hitting the road through WA. Big sweeping soundscapes, soaring melodies, intimate and compelling song writing; the new line-up has a chemistry all of its own. While the Spirits’ three musicians are ever servants of the song – whether it be beautiful ambience, driving rock or gritty blues – the band don’t fit neatly into genres but instead let the song and the moment take them and you, where it will. While the new album has been enjoying some national airplay, it’s really only on the live stage where the power of this three-piece can truly be reckoned.
“This latest album (Don’t You Forget About Me) is a master stroke… Extraordinary vocal prowess… his voice is an anthemic powerhouse that swirls and builds and can lift the roof off any venue. But then he just as easily talks you down and delivers achingly beautiful lyrics up close and personal, sounding just as poised as if you’re sitting side-by-side…sharing confidences.” Katia Smith: Gold MXListen: https://simonlondonandthespirits.bandcamp.com/…/dont…
